How to Write a Driving CV That Gets You Hired in Portugal
A strong driving CV for Portugal puts three things at the top of the page: the licence categories you really hold, any professional driver qualification, and driving experience that matches the vacancy. Keep it to one clear page where you can, write in the language the employer asks for, and never claim a licence or work right you do not have.
This guide covers delivery drivers, truck drivers, bus drivers and chauffeurs. It explains what to include, how to write each section, how Portuguese licence rules affect your CV, and the mistakes that cost applicants interviews. It does not promise a job, and it does not replace the official authorities.
Before you write anything: your CV can be perfect and still fail if you do not have the right to work in Portugal. Read our guide to Portugal work eligibility and the official resources to check first.
What do employers in Portugal look for in a driving CV?
Employers hiring drivers screen for safety and fit before style. Typical checks include:
- Right licence category, valid and in date. For heavy vehicles, also the professional qualification (see the licence section below).
- Relevant experience. Vehicle type, kind of work and years, not just “experienced driver”.
- Safety and rules knowledge. Road safety, load security, rest-time rules for long-distance work.
- Reliability. Punctuality, low-damage record, honest references.
- Practical skills. Route planning, GPS use, vehicle checks, delivery paperwork, customer contact.
- Language. Enough Portuguese or English for the role (see the language section).
This list reflects general recruiter expectations and the licensing rules below. It is editorial guidance, not a legal checklist, so always follow the wording of the actual job advert.
What information should a driving CV include?
Personal and contact information
Include your full name, city, a phone number with the international dialling code, and a professional email address. Add your work-authorisation status only if it is true and relevant, for example “Authorised to work in Portugal” when you hold a valid permit. Leave out marital status, religion and other details the employer does not need. A photo is optional unless the employer asks for one.
Professional summary
Write three or four sentences: your licence categories, years of experience, the kind of driving you do, and what you want next.
Example: “Category C and CE licence holder with six years of long-distance freight experience across [regions]. Familiar with digital tachograph rules, load securing and delivery documentation. Seeking a heavy goods driver role in Portugal.”
Only write this if each statement is true for you.
Driving licence and qualifications
This is the most important section for drivers. List:
- Each licence category you hold, issuing country and expiry date.
- Whether you have exchanged a foreign licence for a Portuguese one, and the date, if applicable.
- Professional driver qualification, such as the CAM / code 95 for heavy goods and passenger vehicles, where you hold it.
- Other certificates you hold, such as first aid or dangerous-goods training.
Do not list a category you do not hold. Employers check, and the licence is a legal requirement.
Work experience
List jobs from newest to oldest. For each one give the employer, location, dates (month and year), vehicle type, and two or three bullets that show results.
| Weak | Stronger |
|---|---|
| Drove trucks | Drove 40-tonne articulated lorries on international routes, [number] trips per month |
| Delivery work | Completed [number] drop-offs per shift with on-time rate of [figure], using route-planning app |
| Good driver | Held a clean record for [number] years with no at-fault accidents |
Use figures only when you can prove them. If you do not know an exact number, describe the work instead.
Driving skills and technical knowledge
Pick the ones that match the advert:
- Route planning and GPS navigation
- Daily vehicle checks and reporting faults
- Safe, defensive driving
- Load securing and handling
- Delivery documents and proof of delivery
- Digital tachograph use (for heavy vehicles)
- Customer service and passenger care
Education, training and languages
Keep education short. Add relevant courses (driver training, first aid, safety). For languages, state your level honestly, for example Portuguese A2, English B2. Employers may test it.
How to write a driving CV step by step
- Choose a clean layout. One page, simple fonts, no tables inside tables. Save as PDF unless told otherwise.
- Write a targeted summary. Match the vehicle type and job title in the advert.
- Put the most relevant driving experience first. Reorder bullets for each vacancy.
- State licences and qualifications exactly. Category, country, expiry.
- Show safety, punctuality and reliability with facts, not adjectives.
- Add measurable results where you can prove them.
- Proofread and tailor. Check dates, contact details and spelling. Ask someone to read it.

Driving CV examples for different jobs in Portugal
| Role | Lead with | Check first with official sources |
|---|---|---|
| Truck driver | Heavy-vehicle licence categories, long-distance and international experience, load securing, tachograph knowledge | CAM / code 95 requirement (IMT) and, for foreign licences, exchange rules |
| Delivery driver | On-time deliveries, route planning, customer contact, proof-of-delivery handling | The licence category needed for the van or vehicle in the advert, including weight limit |
| Bus driver | Passenger safety, customer service, licence category for passenger vehicles | CAM / code 95 for heavy passenger vehicles (IMT) |
| Chauffeur or private driver | Discretion, punctuality, route knowledge, vehicle care | If the work is through ride-hailing platforms (TVDE), IMT has a driver-certification page; confirm what applies to you |
Truck driver CV
Focus on vehicle categories, distances, load types and safety. IMT states that professional driving of heavy goods or passenger vehicles needs the CAM recorded on the licence as code 95, so show it prominently if you have it, and do not imply it if you do not.
Delivery driver CV
Highlight timely deliveries, route optimisation, clear communication with customers and correct handling of delivery documents. Many delivery jobs use lighter vehicles, but the category depends on the vehicle, so read the advert.
Bus driver CV
Emphasise passenger safety, customer service, accident-free record and the correct licence category and professional credentials for passenger transport.
Chauffeur or private driver CV
Highlight discretion, punctuality, customer care and experience with the relevant vehicles. Keep references real and available.

Do you need a Portuguese CV to apply for driving jobs?
Not always. Follow what the employer asks for. If the advert is in English or the recruiter writes in English, an English CV is usually acceptable. If the advert is in Portuguese, or the work involves road signs, paperwork or customers in Portuguese, a Portuguese version can help. This is editorial advice based on how the work is done, not a legal rule, so check each advert.
When you prepare a Portuguese version, use accurate terms. IMT’s own documents use carta de condução (driving licence) and Certificado de Aptidão de Motorista (CAM). Check job titles such as heavy goods or passenger driver against real Portuguese adverts, and ask a fluent speaker to review the final text. Do not translate qualifications loosely. Give the original name, then an explanation.
A competitor page for customer-service roles (Expat-U) recommends English CVs for those jobs. Do not assume that applies to driving roles, which have different communication needs.
Driving licence requirements for foreign workers in Portugal
Licence rules depend on where your licence was issued and your residence status. The table summarises what the official sources say. It is not personal advice.
| Situation | What official sources say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| EU / EEA licence | Your Europe says that when you move to another EU country you usually do not have to exchange the licence, but you may do so voluntarily. | Check IMT for any registration or renewal rules |
| Non-EU licence | The gov.pt page says non-EU licences are not recognised and must be exchanged within 185 days of obtaining residence, if the issuing country signed the international road-traffic conventions. | Check whether your country qualifies and what documents IMT requires |
| OECD or CPLP licence | IMT says these can be valid for driving if the issuing state signed a convention or bilateral agreement, no more than 15 years have passed since issue or last renewal, and the holder is under 60. | Confirm with IMT whether you meet every condition |
| Heavy goods or passenger work | IMT says you need the CAM recorded as code 95. Non-EU licence holders must exchange the licence, complete a minimum 140-hour qualification course and pass the IMT exam. | Plan time and cost for this before applying |
Two points matter for your CV:
- An ordinary driving licence and a professional driver qualification are different documents. List them separately.
- Right to drive is not the same as right to work. A non-EU citizen needs the right to work in Portugal as well. See our work eligibility guide.
Official pages: IMT note on heavy-vehicle drivers, gov.pt driving licence page, IMT foreign licence exchange and Your Europe: exchange and recognition.
Common driving CV mistakes to avoid
- One generic CV for every vacancy. Match vehicle type and job title each time.
- Listing a category you do not hold. It is a legal and trust problem.
- Exaggerating experience or qualifications. Employers verify.
- Leaving out safety training. First aid and safety courses help.
- Spelling errors and old contact details. Re-read before sending.
- Unclear layout or too much personal data.
- Implying you can work in Portugal when you cannot. State authorisation only if you hold it.
How to improve your chances of getting a driving job in Portugal
- Match the CV to the advert. Use the advert’s own terms for vehicle type and duties.
- Prepare a short cover letter. Three to five lines: who you are, your licence, when you can start. For structure ideas see our cover letter examples (UK examples, but the layout carries over).
- Gather documents. Licence, qualification certificates, ID and any work-authorisation proof.
- Practise interview questions. Read our interview tips for international jobs and, if the interview is remote, how to prepare for a video interview with an overseas employer.
- Check the employer before applying. See how to check whether a job offer is genuine (written for Poland, but the checks on company details, written terms and upfront fees apply anywhere) and our safe guide to finding jobs abroad.
- Use relevant listings. Browse driving job listings on Jobspointer and follow each employer’s instructions. You can also upload your resume.
- Plan your first weeks. Once hired, our first 30 days working in Portugal guide explains tax number, social security and contract basics.
No CV or guide can promise a job or visa. Employers decide, and the authorities decide immigration cases.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a CV for a driving job in Portugal?
Put your licence categories, expiry dates and any professional qualification at the top, then relevant experience, skills and languages. Keep it to one clear page and match the advert. See the step-by-step section above.
Can I apply for driving jobs in Portugal with no experience?
You can apply, but be honest. Lead with your valid licence, any training and transferable skills such as reliability and customer service. For heavy goods or passenger work, the CAM requirement applies regardless of experience, so check it with IMT.
Should my driving CV be in Portuguese or English?
Follow the employer’s language. English can be fine when the advert is in English. A Portuguese version can help for roles that involve Portuguese paperwork or customers. This is editorial advice, not a legal rule.
Can foreigners apply for driver jobs in Portugal?
Yes, but non-EU citizens need a residence title that allows employment, according to gov.pt. Read our work eligibility guide and confirm your case with the competent authority.
Which driving licence do I need to work as a truck driver in Portugal?
You need a licence valid in Portugal for the vehicle category, plus the CAM recorded as code 95 for professional heavy-vehicle driving, according to IMT. Foreign non-EU licence holders must exchange the licence, complete a minimum 140-hour course and pass the IMT exam. Confirm current details on the IMT pages linked above.
Do employers in Portugal require a cover letter for driving jobs?
It depends on the employer. Follow the application instructions. A short cover letter rarely hurts and helps explain your licence, availability and motivation.
Can I use the same CV for delivery and truck driver jobs?
Use the same base CV, but tailor the summary, vehicle types and qualifications for each. A truck role needs heavy-vehicle categories and CAM details. A delivery role needs route, customer and paperwork examples.
